I. Introduction to the College

Northwest A&F University (NWAFU) is a key national university directly under the administration of the Chinese Ministry of Education. As one of the top universities in China, NWAFU is supported by the central government under the national “Project 985” and “Project 211”. It is also eligible for the country’s first-stage "Double First-Class" initiative

There are 7 key national disciplines and 2 key national (cultivation) disciplines in the University, and 11 disciplines have entered the top 1% of ESI global disciplines, among which 2 disciplines of agricultural science, botany and zoology have entered the top 1 ‰ of ESI. At present, it has developed into the top agricultural college in China with most complete subjects.

The College of Animal Science and Technology(CAST) has 3 undergraduate programs: Animal Science, Aquaculture and Smart Animal Husbandry Science and Engineering, among which Animal Science and Aquaculture are national first-class majors; Of three first-class disciplines of Animal Husbandry, Aquaculture and Biology, Animal Husbandry is national "double first-class" construction discipline, and its level-II discipline Animal Genetics, Breeding and Reproduction is a key national discipline; There are 5 doctoral and 7 master degree programs and a postdoctoral mobile station in animal husbandry. There are two national platforms, including the State Key Laboratory of Livestock Biology (Developing) and the National Beef Cattle Improvement Center; 12 provincial and ministerial research platforms, including the Key Laboratory of Animal Biotechnology of the Ministry of Agriculture, the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Biotechnology and Application of Modern Cattle Industry, and the Key Laboratory of Animal Genetics, Breeding and Reproduction of Shaanxi Province, and 21 experimental demonstration bases or livestock and poultry industry research institutes. The College also sponsors four academic journals, among which Journal of Livestock Ecology has been selected as the core journal in Chinese.

In recent years, the CAST, aiming at the frontier fields of animal husbandry in the world, has focused on the key technologies of livestock and poultry germplasm innovation and transformation and upgrading in efficient and healthy breeding. It has formed four characteristic and advantageous directions including mining and utilization of livestock and poultry genetic resources, genetic breeding of cattle and sheep, nutrition regulation and feed engineering of livestock and poultry, and efficient and healthy breeding of livestock and poultry. The genetic breeding of cattle and sheep has reached the world-class level, and the livestock genetic resources mining and utilization has reached the leading level in China. Over the past five years, researcher of the College presided over 3 national key R&D planned projects, 5 national major science and technology projects, 9 national key R&D projects, and 74 National Natural Science Fund projects, including 1 National Excellent Youth Science Fund and 1 National Natural Science Fund Key Project. Of numerous awards, there are 21 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological achievement awards, including 2 first prizes of national agriculture, animal husbandry and fishery harvest award, 1 first prize of China's industry-university-research cooperation innovation achievements award, 2 national first-class courses, 3 first prizes of science and technology award in Shaanxi Province, 1 special prize and 1 first prize of Shaanxi Higher Education Teaching Achievement Award; The average annual available funds are more than 50 million yuan, over 1,000 SCI papers are published, and over 100 patents are authorized; The College published 28 works and 5 textbooks of the 13th Five-Year Textbook Publication Plan for agricultural and forestry institutions of higher learning.

There are 158 faculty members in the college, including 40 professors and 63 associate professors, 75 graduate tutors, and 44 doctoral tutors. There is one national talent project expert, two national young talent project experts, one young Changjiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education and one outstanding youth science fund project from the National Natural Science Fund. There is one member of the Animal Husbandry Evaluation Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, one member of the Life Science Department of the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education, one undergraduate teaching audit and evaluation expert, five people who enjoy special government allowances, one innovation team of Changjiang Scholars and Innovation Team Development Plan, five outstanding talents support programs in the new century, and one person who is selected for the "Boxin Plan". There are 3 talent projects, 1 distinguished teacher and 6 new stars in science and technology in Shaanxi Province. There are 7 post experts and station masters of experimental stations in the national modern agricultural industrial technology system, and 8 chief scientists of Shaanxi industrial system. The college has educated more than 10,000 talents of various types. The graduate students have become academic leaders and academic backbones in first-class universities, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, etc. as well as technical leaders and senior management talents of well-known agricultural and animal husbandry enterprises at home and abroad such as CP Group, New Hope Liuhe Co., Ltd. and Novus.
